Response to A Holler's Comment

A Response to A Holler’s Comment Published here

By Chris Sherlock

AH : You have put forward a valid case for the removal of Mr Sandilands.

CS: Not only valid, but sound!

AH: I wonder if you realise that a number of Mr Holleran's family members are school teachers (one a principal and two others leading teachers).  I wonder if you also realise that he has children himself and a large number of nieces, nephews and cousins.  He is not ignorant of the concerns you raise and I believe that you have demonstrated a lack of imagination and empathy with regard to Mr Holleran's field of experience.

CS: This is using a rhetorical technique and logical fallacy known as "argument from authority".  It is a fallacy because while Mr Holleran's family members may be school teachers, it is largely irrelevant to the arguments being put forward.  Mr Holleran is not, in fact, a teacher.  While he may have children himself, he cannot claim ultimate authority on the teaching and raising of children.  Whatever arguments that he has publicly stated, the facts of his person do not make your case.

What is somewhat infuriating is the claim that there is a lack of "imagination" and "empathy".  One wonders why imagination is required in understanding that the disabled babies and children should not be subjected to mocking and exploitation, as Kyle Sandilands exhibited when he strapped a 14 year old girl to a lie detector to subject her to questions about her sex life and later blatantly (and over the protests of his colleagues) mocked the deformed baby of a Pakistani couple.  I might remind the poster that Kyle Sandilands called this child "spider baby".  There was not much empathy displayed by the station when he made his "joke".  I fear that the lack of empathy did not come from Roz Allardice, but rather from those who sanction and defend the right of Kyle Sandilands to make vile remarks about other people's misfortune!

AH: As a teacher, I don't see how leaders in the Australian media have the same responsibility as schools do to educate and protect our students.  Their core business is about communication and satisfying shareholders, which diverges significantly from our core business of literacy and numeracy.

CS: This argument appears to be that only teachers have a responsibility towards protecting children.  This shows a fundamental and disturbing lack of understanding of ethical behaviour.  While 2DayFM's "core business is about communication and satisfying shareholders", it most certainly does NOT mean that they abrogate their responsibilities to the society within which they broadcast their programs.  I also find it remarkable that a teacher would consider that the only core business of teaching is "numeracy and literacy".  Most teachers would disagree that this is the sole function of schools.  Compassion, a duty of care and an ability to nurture the children under their care are a fundamental part of an effective education system.  Without this, learning is significantly hampered and the quality of life of young people is significantly impaired.

AH: I would also like to point out that Mr Sandilands' behaviour towards women is fairly typical of Australian males with a similar intellect and maturity as Mr Sandilands.

CS: I challenge this. Mr Sandiland's sexist and mysoginistic behaviour is NOT typical of the average Australian male.  Most males do not want to "shut the mouth" of female journalists.  Only a small minority would ever utter in public that "you haven't got that much titty to be wearing that low cut a blouse.  Watch your mouth, girl, or I will hunt you down. It is disgusting and horrid to think that you have such a low opinion of your fellow countrymen, and is completely inaccurate.

AH: I ask you, how do your students learn to stand up to bullying of the kind you describe?  How do any of us teach students how to manage challenging situations and maintain their own power?  Without training in resilience, removing Mr Sandilands (and other periodically offensive media personalities - Sam Newman, Eddie McGuire, Alan Jones), people never learn how to deal with the type of antisocial Mr Sandilands indulges in.

CS: The question asserts that in order to allow students to "manage challenging situations" they must listen to abuse on commercial radio.  What absurdity!  To take the argument to its absurd conclusions, one must believe that in order to reduce antisocial behaviour one must have prominent figures undertake antisocial behaviour.

Additional Details of ACMA Investigation

ACMA ARE INVESTIGATING 2DAY FM FOR ALLEGED BREACH OF The Additional condition on commercial radio broadcasting licence No 3032 under subsection 43(1) of the Broadcast Services Act 1992

ACMA has decided to investigate a complaint against relevant paragraphs of said mentioned additional licence condition. The first additional condition was imposed on 2DayFM on the 3rd March 2010 and is to cease effect 3 years after the initial date of effect. This came about after Kyle Sandilands asked a minor live on air about her sex life to which she admitted to being uncomfortable being interviewed and that she had been raped.

The latest alleged breach relates to one of the news segments broadcast on the Kyle & Jackie O show on the 20th April 2012. The comments made were in relation to a baby born with a genetic defect that resulted in him having four extra limbs. Kyle Sandilands described baby Umar Farooq as ‘Spider Baby’.

http://debritz.net/audio/kjobaby.mp3

Despite his co-workers pleading (at least initially) with him to stop and the flashing lights, bells and whistles (that were actually audible to the listener) Kyle continued to make derogative and inflammatory comments in relation to this child.

Indeed Kyle was mocking the measures put in place by Austereo – For example the flashing light system – Imagine it going to the Olympics and you look next to you and there’s spider baby [makes spider noises]. And you think: I’ve got no chance. Trust me, being up against spider baby [makes high-pitched spider noises]. Oh there’s the flashing red light - Babies might write a letter, I’d better shut up … [puts on high-pitched voice] ‘I’m a baby that also has a strange leg, so I took great offence.’

After being told to ‘Move on’ by Jackie O a mother herself, Gemma and Jackie O burst into fits of giggles (while Kyle was continually making spider noises) to the point that they had to go off air and cut to an Ad!

This incident occurred only 24 days after the (27th March 2012) when ACMA began formal steps to impose it’s second licence condition on 2Day FM, finding they had breached the Commercial Radio Codes of Practice 2011 (the codes) AGAIN after Kyle Sandilands indecent and offensive comments about a female journalist (22nd November 2011). In essence ACMA gave the licensee a ‘Notice of intention to impose an additional licence condition.’

In response to this incident, 2DayFM indicated that it had introduced several safeguards, including

  • Instructing Kyle Sandilands and his management of the sort of remarks that are unacceptable and must not be repeated.
  • Extending the broadcast delay for the program from 10 seconds to 30 seconds.
  • Installing a warning light in Sydney (and LA) to allow production staff and content advisors to notify announcers when content may be of concern.

On May 16th 2012 ACMA officially handed down it’s final ruling on it’s latest investigation into Kyle Sandilands whereby ALL content broadcast by 2DayFM for 5 years must not offend generally accepted standards of decency, having regard to the demographic characteristics of the audience of the relevant program.

A statement followed from Southern Cross Austereo CEO, Rhys Holleran said, “Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) acknowledges today’s decision by ACMA and is reviewing all available options. SCA finds the decision broad reaching and its lengthy term unprecedented. SCA believes ACMA has not fully taken into consideration the extensive processes and procedures that the business has taken upon itself to implement with regards to comments made by Kyle Sandilands on 22 November 2011.”

ACMA Investigate Kyle Sandilands Again

We at SVK are pleased with ACMA's decision today to investigate Kyle Sandiland's recent on air comments. (20th April 2012) http://debritz.net/audio/kjobaby.mp3

We believe that the recent measures put in place by Austereo are not working - as evidenced by Kyle's mocking behaviour when the flashing lights first came on.

Numerous attempts have been made to 'rebrand' Kyle, including the segment ‘Kyle and Jackie O Give back’, the recent appearance on Price is Right, The Kissing Booth etc etc these have clearly fallen short. Kyle aims to shock and he delivers. HOWEVER public sentiment is changing. We no longer want the Nasty Judge, the Bully influencing our children. This is evidenced by the recent popularity of shows like The Voice.

Kyle’s most recent transgression is potentially a breach of the additional licensing condition introduced in 2010 to ensure that care of children is taken during Kyle and Jackie O broadcasts. S22 43(1), 1 (b) and 2 (b) have been implemented to ensure that children are not identifiable, exploited nor humiliated for entertainment purposes.

Licensing Condition 4 (a), (b), & (c) refer to the training programs that were implemeted in response to the ‘rape incident’ of 2010. May we remind you that Kyle Sandilands was suspended at this time.

These conditions were supposed to ensure that all children used in broadcasts were sufficiently protected.

Indeed all members of 2Day FM staff and contractors connected with the program were required to undertake training in this regard.

It is apparent to us that this training has not protected baby Umar Farooq from exploitation nor humiliation.

Nor has it ensured that generally accepted standards of common decency have been employed.

At SVK we are concerned about the negative influence Kyle Sandilands is having upon his listeners and society at large and we welcome ACMA's investigation of this licence breach against this child

Open Letter to Rhys Holleran

Dear Mr Holleran,

You might wonder why someone like me has persevered for so long in regards to trying to persuade you to get rid of Kyle Sandilands? I would like to try and explain why. If nothing more, surely you must realise that to spend as long as I do emailing people, contacting sponsors, rallying friends to the point of ad nauseum on my FaceBook and Twitter pages, surely you must realise that I feel passionate about this, that I have something to say.

You can write me off, and the other 35,000+ others who signed a Petition to get rid of Kyle as “losers”, “fanatics”, “Sad people with nothing else to do with their lives”…any excuse that works for you!  But I am none of these things. I lead an incredibly busy and fulfilling life, and have never been one to do something like this before. I really have very little time to become so involved in such a campaign. And I am not a militant-type person, always on whatever soap-box happens to be the flavour of the month.  So, surely, at the very least, you could give me the time to explain why I feel so passionately about this.  I know I will probably not change your mind, (all the pity). But at least I can say I tried; that I tried to make a difference and that I got off the fence and took a stand!

I am a teacher. I have been teaching now for 30 or so years. My present school is in one of the lowest socio-economic areas of Australia. Daily, we need to contend with fights, bullying, threats, abuse, sexist language, stand-over tactics, etc  I used to teach at a Private Boys’ College. I was there as Head Of English and held the position of Campus Director, as well, and taught there for over 20 years. Recently, an ex-colleague of mine and I counted up how many cases of suicide we could recall, over the years, of our ex-students, (this being after they had left school). We totalled at least 18 students, over a 20-plus year period. These were kids from the so-called “good families”, kids who were most likely to be seen to have a bright future ahead.

I remember every one of those boys, Mr Holleran. At the time, there was no indication that this might be how they would chose to end their lives. But afterwards, in most cases, I could determine a common thread running through their school days!  They were often the more sensitive kids, (not the Sports ‘jocks’); often more introverted, and definitely the butt end of the bullying and taunting that goes on in a class room.  The most common taunt a boy can use at another boy is “You’re fat”; “You’re Gay”, “I’m going to get you.” With anyone with a healthy self-esteem, these taunts would be water off a duck’s back to me. (Well, not sure about the treat to be “got’! Never nice to be threatened, is it?). But, to some, these really are horrible taunts that they live in fear of.

Mr Holleran, maybe you have never been bullied. I don’t know you. From my experience, those who condone bullying have either never been at the receiving end, so cannot possibly understand it. Or they have been so severely bullied themselves, that they seek refuge in becoming bullies themselves, or by condoning it, and so managed to save themselves in this way.

I can promise you, it happens every day in classrooms all over Australia, and it is not something we can ignore.  As a consequence of my many years as a teacher, I became more involved in working with teachers to recognise and try and prevent suicide and other consequences of bullying. I have worked now in this capacity for many years.

The other side of the coin is the intimidation and threats that we, as teachers, also have to endure. Why should I, as a teacher, be told by a student, that he will ‘get me’, “hunt me down” ? Why should I, simply because I am doing my job in a calm, logical, non-threatening manner, be called a “Fat Slag”? Why should anyone in a position where they are requited to deal with people, be threatened in such a way? This happens day in and day out in many schools.

I wrote to Kyle Sandilands at one stage and politely invited him to witness what happens in a classroom. Needless to say, he didn’t even have the courtesy to respond. I send the same Challenge to you…you are welcome to come into my classroom and see exactly how a role model like Kyle Sandilands impacts upon the most vulnerable and impressionable in our society.

Of course I am not naïve enough to blame all of society’s ills on Mr Sandilands. But I do hold those who speak publicly in such a foul way, accountable to some degree. By allowing him a voice, you too must hold some of that accountability.

Some people have huge charisma and can sway impressionable people; for this very reason, their responsibility becomes a two-edged sword. They can entertain (the clever ones do) and eductate. But others just ride rough-shod over everyone they see as a threat to their own established place in their own perceived hierarchy. They should be held accountable by society for the immense power they wield. They own society some sense of responsibility, surely, for being given the opportunity to use the radio as their public forum. Of course, radio can be and should be entertaining. And provocative! It should encourage debate, challenge our perceptions, comfort-zones, etc.  But surely not at the expense of other peoples’ sense of self-worth? In this, I believe Kyle Sandiland fails to live up to the responsibilities of being given “public voice”. I am not saying he should always be serious, and pc. But he surely should not abuse people simply because he perceives them as being weaker or different or lesser beings than he is. He should not abuse people for having a different perspective on life than he does. He should not threaten those who have a different viewpoint to his.

I also have great 'power' as a teacher. Imagine if I used my 'power' to intimidate and bully: society would give me short shrift. Imagine if I used my classroom as my own personal soapbox to down-cry everything in society that I hate? People would surely criticise me very vocally...and so they should! Some of us are in positions where it becomes very easy for us to manipulate people's viewpoints, by using our own forums to put forward our personal viewpoints. This doesn't mean that we should! I am responsible for moulding young minds. And so is Kyle Sandilands! He has a social responsibility, in amongst all the entertainment, to model society’s norms.

I think you were stated, when the ACMA’s ruling came out, that decency was hard to define. It really isn’t! I am sure you do not derive all your entertainment from listening to the likes of misogyny, threats, put-downs, jokes at the expense of others. I cannot believe a man in your position would! So…why do you condone the rest of society having to be affected by this horrible behaviour?

I must say I am so tired of those saying “Well, if you don’t like it, turn it off.” I do, of course. And, to be honest, I am sure you do too. I am sure you do not get your daily entertainment by listening to Mr Sandiland’s brand of ‘humour’. I am sure you would not want your own children listening solely to Mr Sandiland. You are an educated man! You can make these choices. Unfortunately, there are many out there who do not, can not make these educated choices. Are you so far removed from society that you are not aware that these people are out there? I cannot believe that!

So Kyle Sandilands becomes their spokesperson, the one who ‘gives the finger’ to the rest of society, the one who can ‘tell it like it is’ (because they themselves are so disenfranchised and powerless; they live vacuously through Kyle ‘sticking the boot in’). They listen to him; they emulate his way of talking, his anger, his misogyny (affected or not, I really don’t know).
And so they spread the rot!

I am NOT a wowser; I am not someone who is all ‘pc’ and can never have a joke. I can laugh at many ‘unacceptable’ things, most certainly within the privacy of my own group of friends.
However, what is simply not acceptable is when someone like Kyle Sandilands continually gains mileage and self-elevation through belittling, threatening language publicly!

I do not believe that “Free Speech” entitles anyone to say what they want to in public. If Kyle has so much trouble disguising his apparent hatred and disrespect for society, I think he should find another venue or medium!

I can only ask you to reflect, in good conscience, on this.

Removing Kyle Sandilands won’t undo all the woes of the world. But it will surely help the one or two, or several, or hundreds who are told daily that they will be ‘hunted down’ simply for having an opinion, simply for being different; simply for being of a perceived ‘lesser’ gender, race, ability, or what ever Kyle Sandilands thinks is less important than his own highly-inflated self-importance!

With respect, and in good conscience, I remain
Roz Allardice

3-4 loony women? We think not

Late last night (Thursday 26th April) almost a week after Kyle made these insensitive comments about baby Umar, SackVileKyle released this media statement describing Kyle's behaviour and his complete disregard for the processes and warnings that Southern Cross Austereo have put in place to curb his disgusting statements.
SCA have advised ACMA, other media outlets and companies that advertise on the Kyle & Jackie O show, that they have a number of processes and systems in place, as well as a list of "not allowed"s that will make sure Kyle does not offend again. They have said that the restrictions that ACMA will be placing on SCA are unworkable (the restrictions are basically that no-one on 2dayfm can demean women or children), and the systems in place work.
THEY DO NOT.
Further to this, we have been advised by various SCA/ 2dayfm insiders, that SCA is coaching companies on what to say when we approach them to request they remove their advertising from the Kyle & Jackie O show. This coaching includes things like "Southern Cross Austereo have processes in place and have assured us that similar issues will not reoccur".
However KYLE'S INDECENCY CONTINUES TO OCCUR.

Kyle has referred to us as 3-4 feminists in Victoria or somewhere like that. We have been advised that Southern Cross Austereo have told various media outlets and companies that advertise with them, that we are a bunch of loonies.
The truth is that this petition now has over 35,000 signatures from people calling on companies to cease advertising on 2dayfm until Kyle Sandilands is sacked. This Facebook group has almost 250 people regularly contacting companies that advertise on Kyle & Jackie O to request they remove advertising and this twitter feed has almost 300 people following it for regular update on our campaign.
These THOUSANDS of people are male and female. They include teachers, business executives, parents, accountants, people with no children, people with disabilities, victims of abuse, news reporters and more.

This campaign is so much more than 3-4 loony women.

Finally it would appear that despite their opinions that we are those few loony feminists, 2dayfm agrees with us. Within hours of the release of our statement last night, which we also sent to Southern Cross Austereo and 2dayfm, the podcast on the 2dayfm website was taken down.
If they didn't think it inappropriate, why were the traffic lights and whistles going off? Why was it removed?
Even more interesting, this podcast was on the 2dayfm website for almost a week, it was only removed AFTER we brought it to the attention of a number of media outlets. Did 2dayfm think that at the time it was inappropriate (hence the lights & whistles), but after nothing was said during Friday 20th April that it must have been OK and so was posted on the website?

Spider Baby’; Acceptable Broadcasting

Or Has Kyle Sandilands Gone Too Far?

Doctors in Pakistan have successfully removed four extra limbs from a baby born with a rare genetic condition.

This story, which for many of us was one of hope, has been turned into an offensive joke by repeat offender, shock jock Kyle Sandilands.  Five minutes into Friday's program, with lights flashing and bells and whistles going off, Sandilands joked that ‘Spider Baby’ would be unbeatable in the Olympics as it scuttled past its competitors. http://debritz.net/audio/kjobaby.mp3

Despite being told repeatedly to stop, to turn his mike down, Kyle continued to joke about the fact that the lights were flashing, saying that babies would be writing letters of complaint.  “Hello I am a baby who also has strange legs…”

Kyle’s disregard for, and indeed reluctance to adhere to the flashing lights, warning bells, whistles etc triggered by the radio producers suggests that his recently subdued style of broadcasting is fast approaching its use by date. This raises serious concerns for listeners, and should do likewise for his employers as to ignore the obvious tell tale signs could cost them their jobs and the radio network it's license.

Indeed under proposed licensing conditions handed down by the ACMA in March (http://www.acma.gov.au/WEB/STANDARD/pc=PC_410318), Southern Cross Austereo have been warned that if they broadcast material which offends generally accepted standards of decency the network risks losing their licence.  It is understood that SCA have appealed this decision arguing that the term ‘generally accepted standard of decency’ is broad and ambiguous and have labelled it unworkable.  “Terms such as “decency”, “demeaning”, and “undue emphasis” are broad and ambiguous and mean different things to different people. In 2DAY FM’s view this makes the proposed licence condition unworkable.” http://southerncrossaustereo.com.au/pdf/SCA-ACMA-QA.pdf

Baby Umar Farooq before and after the successful surgery that removed his extra limbs.  His father Imrain Shaikh said he was very grateful that his son was treated. “We are a poor family.  I am thankful to the government and doctors for helping [sic] is successful operating my baby.” (http://www.thestandard.co.zw/home/71-health-a-fitness/34973-doctors-successfully-remove-extra-limbs-from-baby-born-with-six-legs.html)

We at the Sack Vile Kyle campaign believe that it is abundantly clear that the systems put in place by Austereo to keep Kyle's comments compliant to publicly acceptable standards of decency as set out by the ACMA are failing dismally. Kyle’s comments regarding baby Umar are far from ambiguous.  It could be argued that Kyle has, in this instance, acted in a manner that offends the most lenient persons' standards of decency.  It was not so long ago that the Australian community embraced conjoined twins Trishna and Krishna and followed their journey as they prepared for and then successfully underwent surgery to be separated in order to live full and productive lives.  In our opinion, Baby Umar ought to be treated with the same amount of respect and dignity afforded to Trishna and Krishna.

Since Kyle’s November incident 150 days ago where he abused and demeaned journalist Alison Stephenson, 162 sponsors have withdrawn their financial backing of the show.  It seems Austereo are struggling to attract new sponsors with only a handful of advertisements being played during the three hour long Kyle and Jackie O show.  In order to entice new sponsors SCA have been sending out the abovementioned document explaining their interpretation of the ACMA investigation, its findings and their argument that the measures that they have put in place are enough to ensure that Kyle’s behaviour is compliant with generally accepted standards of decency.  (Of particular interest are Q.2, 7 and 11 see link to SCA doc above.)

We are confident that the majority of Australians would find Kyle’s comments in relation to young baby Umar to be offensive in the extreme.  Once again, Southern Cross Austereo have failed to rein in Kyle Sandilands.   How much is too much?

Kyle's impact on our youth

Sack Vile Kyle Supporter Roz, a teacher with over 32 years experience, has written this post for us, explaining how Kyle's comments and behaviour impacts on her students.
For 32 years I have been a teacher, mostly an English teacher, but also History teacher, Head of English, Campus Director and in the latter part of my career, working more in behavioural management of adolescent boys.  I have worked in teacher education for risk-identification for suicide awareness, pastoral care and grief workshops for teenagers.  After 22 years in Australian schools, (where my schools ranged from an Independent Boys’ Only Catholic College to a Housing Commission catchment area where the school received one of the lowest Naplan results for English/Mathematics in all of Australia),  I then relocated to Hong Kong where I have been employed, on and off,  by the Hong Kong Education Department for the past ten years.
What drives my passion for teaching young people?
I believe that we are all entitled to be heard, regardless of what voice we may be using.
I believe that we all have a story; some kids just don’t have to tools available to tell their story.  And telling our story is Liberating!   So…by providing the tools, gives us all a voice.  By being heard, we are empowered.  To me this is the power of true education.  And I am humbled as an English teacher as it is a subject that allows me to provide the tools to enable personal growth and enrichment.
I believe that through the medium of literature, young people can experience life, have a voice, know passion and recognise the previously unknown.
I also believe that NO-one wants to be the class clown, the fool in the class, and if we look hard enough we will always find a why, and if we try hard enough we will expose then liberate the passion!
This is not to say I have not experienced many failures in the classroom.  But they are fewer than the over-riding successes!  I like to believe that my students can recognise that firstly, I love teaching, I love kids, I love (and know!) my subject matter, and that I am fair!  When kids realise these four things, I believe teaching is the easiest job in the world.
Unfortunately, some people in our society work very hard at belittling others so much so that the others never get  to be heard; they remain silent and embittered, They are bullied, intimidated, threatened and therefore never find their own person and never get to acknowledge their own empowerment.
I have learnt that there are many things that can undermine my ability in my attempts to be a good teacher and for my students to respond as the best they can!  Despite all my own efforts, there are some aspects in society that constantly prevent kids from blossoming.  The longer I have been teaching, the more I recognise these subversive elements which work to undermine and diminish good parenting and good teaching.  Unfortunately, the most vulnerable, the most impressionable young people are often the ones to whom these subversive ’personalities’ have the greatest appeal. These adolescents, lacking good strong role models, tend to lean towards the lowest common denominators… the crude, the uncouth, the loudmouthed, the vile!  These kids are angry, (for so many reasons which cannot be gone into here), so they cling to those who feed their anger.

They love seeing seemingly-powerful personalities giving the finger to society, and apparently getting away with it.  These kids see themselves as powerless and not being able to get away with the same anti-social behaviour.  To live vacuously through others who can get away with vileness is liberating to them.
And so the Kyle Sandilands of this world gain monumental influence. They can stick it to authority, publicly, on the airways, and be seen to ‘get away with it’!    Not only do they seem to escape censure, they apparently become rich and famous in doing so!  Oh, how these kids look up to that: the power of “telling it as it is” and not only not getting into trouble for such anti-social behaviour,  but to actually gain fame and fortune through doing it!
And so we meet the vile and the ugly. Role-models: some sporting people, radio announcers, singers; people who once would have had very little influence are suddenly, through the media, made instant heroes in our young people’s lives!
And…if you listen to these outspoken, self-opinionated, chip-on-the-shoulder people long enough (because most of these ‘personalities’, you will see, are from the same sorts of backgrounds as those who adore them)…..well, after a while, it starts to rub off.
And the people listening and witnessing the Vileness, suddenly realise that, Yes, they can adopt the same sort of behaviour and also ‘get away with it”.  They can abuse and intimidate, and bully and threaten anyone they see as weaker than they are.
It’s all about pecking order.
School are the greatest jungles out there.  The bullying and threatening verbal abuse that goes on in schools would  leave most people reeling; they could never be believed by anyone on the ‘outside’  School administrators go to great efforts to pretend it isn’t happening, or else they put strategies in place (usually ineffective) to prevent it happening on a larger scale.  Or do anything to prevent the general public to hear of it.
In all, I have been teaching for 33 years now.  There has not ever been one class, not one year group, in any year since 1979 when I first started teaching, that I have not witnessed daily bullying and/or horrible verbal put-downs.  And these on a level far greater than anything I have ever encountered in any other part of society.  I believe it has become worse, even though schools have become more conscious of working on prevention.
It is endemic!  It is across the board: independent and private schools through to state schools.
And so…when I personally became aware of someone who is acting so far outside of society’s best interests; someone who is doing everything he can to undermine what I am trying to do in the classroom; someone who flaunts sexism and bullying and misogyny and verbal intimidation on the public airways, and when I hear my students using the same words that Kyle Sandilands uses when someone disagrees with him, “”I’ll hunt you down”…well how can I possibly turn a blind eye?
If I ignore this behaviour, I am saying that all the good work I try to do in the classroom is worth nothing if someone can so easily undermine it.

One of the most common bullying tactics in the classroom today is for one student to say to another “I’m going to get you”.  This term is red rag to a bull for me! It’s the one thing that will probably see me over-react!  Why should anyone be silenced by another through fear of being ‘got’?
It’s used constantly to apply pressure to perceived threats.  And I simply won’t stand for it to be used to silence anyone.
And the putdowns…the word “fat” and “gay” seem to be used as the worst type of put-down in the classroom!  Students seem to think that they are the worst names to call another, and they are used frequently. Both these words seem to induce irrational retaliatory reactions which rapidly escalate into war-zone scenario!  Meanwhile other students are trying to learn n an environment that makes learning impossible; parents are calling to say their child cannot sleep and doesn’t want to attend school any more, because of name calling.
As a teacher, when I reprimand someone, reasonably and fairly, I do not want them to threaten to ‘get me.”  I have had many incidents of this in my teaching life.  Why should I be prevented from doing my job; a job that society has entrusted to me; a job that I do competently and professionally, only to be abused because a student has:  A) listened to the likes of Vile Kyle, and B)  has not been able to handle criticism, and taken it personally?
I am also entrusted by society to keep my students safe, under Duty of Care.  This is becoming more and more difficult as skirmishes break out in classrooms and playgrounds as students increasingly threaten to ‘get’ others’ or taunt them.
It is one thing to say ‘sticks and stones will break your bones but names will never hurt you” More fights break out in schools through name-calling than any other reason.
It is one thing to say if you don’t like “listening to people like Kyle Sandilands, switch off the radio”.
These are cop-outs and belie the reality:  that name-calling can be very hurtful.  And although we can turn the radio off, it is an undeniable fact that those who are the most impressionable and vulnerable in our society, do not.  Whether we listen or not, we are still part of a society which is affected by this anti-social behaviour.
That is why I believe Kyle Sandilands must be removed from public airways.  How dare he respond to justified, calm, dispassionate logical criticism by resorting to public threats?  He is not the role model I want in my classroom. He is not the role model I want for the future.  And as long as he, and his ilk,  are given permission by our society, to disguise their Hate Talk as Freedom of Speech, we will continue to suffer as our children mimic and admire him for  giving their own anger a voice and ‘getting away with it” .
By disingenuously labelling Hate Talk as Freedom of Speech, people like Kyle manipulate those who feel powerless, and incite them into a “them and us position”, which can only further cause disintegration in our society.   He’s actually fuelling their anger and providing them with a scapegoat upon which to hang their anger.  I believe we should not underestimate this sort of ‘power’. Especially when wielded by one who is so angry himself?

By the way, I have never ever been bullied myself!  I must be one of the 15 % who say they have never felt intimidated! If someone wants to call me Fat, or whatever, I simply, really couldn’t care.  But if I were in a classroom, aged 14, and someone threatened to ‘get me” I think I would feel very scared!  We simply cannot allow our children to feel scared in one of the places where they should feel the safest!
And on the other side of the coin, I have a 21 year old daughter who does have self-esteem issues.  This is something so far out of my own personal growing-up experience and it is so hard to deal with when you have never suffered from this yourself.  My beautiful articulate, bright and overly-sensitive daughter has been raised to believe in herself; she doesn’t experience put-downs in her family life, but school has been difficult for her.  She has experienced the worst sort of ‘girl-bullying’.   Being a parent, knowing how to deal with it from a teacher’s perspective, yet living through the powerlessness of watching her disintegration as well as witnessing the mismanagement of a school dealing with it…
What DO you do as a parent when you find your teenage daughter curled up on the floor, sobbing and refusing to go to school because of how others are treating her?  Witnessing her fear of watching others being victimised, the dilemma of wondering whether to speak up, and becoming a victim herself?   Begging me “not to make a fuss’ as it will only make it worse?  And me knowing it goes so much against everything I believe in, not to make a fuss, but capitulating to her requests because she is my daughter, I love her and I don’t want it to become worse.  The powerlessness of the child being bullied!  The powerlessness of the parent enduring it!
I may not always have been able to speak up for my daughter, but sure as HELL, I’m going to stand up and be counted now!
Oh and finally, I want to say that most of middle-class Australia has absolutely no idea of what is happening in some ‘burbs!  Some of my students from a particular broadacre housing area (in Tasmania) have added me to their Face Book pages now that I am no longer teaching them.  They added me about a year ago, and I think they have forgotten that I am there.  I lurk and read and shudder.  Most people would have NO idea what is happening in these kids’ lives.  The students are aged 14-17, and what I read would be unbelievable to most of Australia.  These are the kids who LOVE Kyle, as do their unemployed Mums. These are the families who are living the “Housos” life yet love the series so much. They actually use the same terminology as the Kyles of this world; they swagger and curse and smoke, (and, driving at 15, avoid the Police in their hotted-up Utes) and have sex with their 12 year-old girlfriends, and life is simply to be lived as hard and as fast as possible!  And they write all about it on Face Book…not to brag, but just because this is how it is.  This is their Life!
And with the likes of Kyle fuelling their anger, feeding their social discontent, energising them, we will never break the cycle.

ACMA new commercial radio standards

This is a statement from the ACMA website here on 21st March 2012.

The ACMA has made new Commercial Radio Standards that strengthen the rules on advertising and the disclosure of commercial influence on commercial radio programs.
‘The new standards begin 1 May and reflect the ACMA’s recent decision to continue regulating both commercial influence in current affairs programs and advertising on commercial radio,’ said ACMA Chairman, Chris Chapman.
The standards were developed following the ACMA’s review and extensive consultation with industry and the public seeking comment on the proposed reforms.
‘This reform package strengthens protections for listeners while at the same time reducing the regulatory burden on industry,’ Mr Chapman said.

The ACMA’s reforms to the Disclosure Standard:

§  require disclosure of not only ‘presenter agreements’ (where the presenter has a commercial agreement with a sponsor) but also of some ‘licensee agreements’ (where the presenter has an interest in the licensee company, which in turn has a commercial agreement with a sponsor)
§  allow current affairs presenters more flexibility in how they identify sponsorship arrangements – rather than compelling them to use one of six current scripted statements
§  change the register and formal notifications process so that industry can keep online registers without the need for formal notices to the ACMA.
The ACMA has reformed the Advertising Standard by making it clear that advertising must be distinguishable from other program material at the time of broadcast, rather than later in a segment or program generally.
Finally, in both standards, the definition of 'consideration' has been broadened by including other beneficial and indirect benefits to better capture instances of paid advertising and commercial influence.
The ACMA will also be revoking from 1 May the Compliance Program Standard, which had required commercial radio licensees to undertake compliance education and audits.
